Movie Clip Wednesday - Musical

Boxer is hosting a Movie Clip Wednesday Meme where everyone picks a clip from their favorite movies based on a weekly theme. This week's theme is Musicals - MUSICALS! I'm a straight guy, how am I suppose to do this? Am I suppose to check my genitalia at the door and pick something from West Side Story, Cabaret or Hello Dolly? Should I drink so much tequila that I could actually watch all of Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and be so happy at the end that I don't have a problem with crying (don't ask me how I know this)?

After I finished breathing into a paper bag, I thought for a minute about movies with songs that may not necessarily be classified as your typical, Broadway musical. Willy Wonka, the Blues Brothers and the Rocky Horror Picture Show came to mind and I like all of those movies. But then I thought, is there a manly man's musical out there? One that was macho enough that the watching of it would never call my sexuality into question. Then it hit me - yes there is...

1969's Paint Your Wagon - truely horrible I know, but my manhood is still in tact. I can live with that.

grrrrrrrrrrherhahahahahaha! breathing into a paper bag! i agree -there is something inherently ghey about musicals. but nothing is gheyer than male figure skating. i saw the american skater last night -wearing a black get up with a prink corset like back. he blew kisses. i died a little inside.

lee marvin! theres a mans man. wasnt there any occasions where charles bronson sang? i think clint eastwood has sang in more than this movie but i cant remember. great choice -and totally manly. not to worry!

Happy MCW~

GMTA. My FIRST thought was Lee (don't tell ME I can't sing) Marvin. But I never saw "Paint Wagon" and the clips of "Cat Ballou" all blew chunks.

Great selection!

happy MCW

Yeah, I've been getting dizzy from all the gayness lately. I like to watch the pairs skating and the womens singles, but the men's singles is too creepy for me. Watch Blades of Glory sometime. It'll at least make men's skating tolerable because you'll think of the scenes from that movie.

Someone compared Lee Marvin's singing to "water gurgling down a drain pipe". I think that about says it. Off the top of my head, Clint sang country songs in Honky Tomk Man and more recently sang the final song (not on screen though) for Gran Torino. He's a big Jazz buff.

Troll
See above comment on Marvin. Actors like him just don't have a big range, and that's OK. You have to know your limitations. Props for trying but failing miserably.

:) Oh, that's gay! What a young Mr. Eastwood, I never saw this. And Mr. Marvin singing - it sounds like he had some of that Red Label they hand out in The Chuch of Marilyn!
Nice choices!

Good morning Buzz Kill,

I have to hand it to you. I figured you would find something obscure and you did. Ouch my ears.

Don't you think you're being just a little insecure? Think of Gene Kelly or Fred Astaire both great athletes.

bwahahahaahha - I think your post is a good as your picks. Points for finding manly men singing AND for finding Clint Eastwood. Did you see Gran Torino? He sings (and wrote the song) at the end of the movie. I never understood "Paint Your Wagon" so I think I'll need to watch again.

Your Grade: A+

These are classic! I remember these from the day, too. Showing my ge. Now I'm gonna have that song in my head all dang day ... I was borrrrnnnn under a wanderin' star..... I was bornnnnn undera wanderin' star. Great choice!

P.S. I have to agree with you on the men's ice skating. Those costumes are too, too much.

A guy's GOTTA respect his own manhood. Good Call.

Actually, IMDB.com said that Marvin was really drunk for most of this movie. So he was a drunk playing a drunk.

Karl
The theme was musicals and men's figure skating is on prime time, so I'm very insecure.

Boxer
I wouldn't recommend watching this train wreck. The 2 samples I gave you are red flags. I did see Gran Torino. I'm ashamed to say I found it funny as hell. I had an uncle who was a lot like Walt Kowalski (a postman instead of an autoworker and nowhere near as cool as Eastwood) and I use to kringe at some of the things he said. I thought of him a lot while watching this movie.

Pam
Yeah, make thse song in my head stop! Before I started looking at other movie clips, that song was the only thing I could remember from watching this movie some 20 years ago.

Heff
Coming from you Heff, that's a great compliment. Where have you been? I can't find your blog anymore and I miss it (Donna).

Uh-oh...I guess it's a big item now-a-days, but, I'll let you in on something.
If it hadn't been for a gay soldier in Viet Nam who knew more about what a mortar attack was than me?...I wouldn't be here today.
In fact, a small group of us were just standing around drinking (yeah...shouldn't have been, but, what're they gonna do? Bend our dogtags?) and hearing what sounded for all the world like heavy equipment being dropped nearby. Figured it to be Corp of Engineers monkeying around with portable runway.
Guy hollers out of his bunker to get the heck out'a there...we pick up and git.
To this day I'll stand by any American that says they're gay and wants their rights back.
Any day.

Now...just who the heck says Lee Marvin can't sing?!
That's a great voice!
Heck, I should know! I sound a lot like him!
(should'a got the Oscar for it)
d=))
(maybe not...)
But, ICE SKATING?!
That ain't olympics!
geez...
might as well have an Olympic Tiddly-winks contest! Or badmitton.

(WHAT!? They do!? You're KIDDING ME!)

Fabulous! If Eastwood and Marvin can do it, then so can BuzzKill!
