Movie Clip Wednesday - Best Coming of Age Movie

With Boxer showing that she has a pulse even though her first post in ages was in celebration of the Day of the Dead, she's still not quite ready to assume her hostess duties. So, the Milk River Madman continues hosting the Movie Clip Wednesday Meme where everyone picks a clip from their favorite movies based on a weekly theme and tries to keep the clip or clips to around 3 minutes long. This week's theme is FAVORITE COMING OF AGE MOVIE. There are only 2 movies that jump out as coming-of-age movies that really affected me while I was coming of age. The first was 1971's Summer of '42. I remember reading the book by Herman Raucher in eight grade (a friend loaned it to me) and this was pretty racy stuff. I then saw the film a couple of years later. Jennifer O'Neill was totally hot in this movie and she's the older woman seducing the naive teenage boy. Probably at the top of every boy's fantasy list. Unfortunately (as is the case lately) I couldn't find any decent clips. And I have a sneaking suspicion that Karl might go with this one.
So that leaves the only other movie that influenced me in my formative post-pubescent (that makes me sound like a girl, doesn't it?) years. And that movie would be - 1982's Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Who couldn't relate to the problems that high school kids like Rat and Brad have. And of course, the quintessential coming-of-age masturbation scene is the Phoebe Cates pool scene. You'd think as famous (or infamous) as this scene is, that it would be easy to find - NOT. After an hour of searching various sites (that I'm sure have infected my computer), this was the best I could do. And every time I hear the Cars' Moving in Stereo, this scene flashes before my eyes. It reeks havoc when I'm driving.

This is such a great movie. I'm so glad someone chose it. Spicoli and the teacher; Judge Reinhold in the pirate outfit at the burger joint; classic stuff ... not just this Phoebe Cates scene.

YES!!! Perfect movie. If I hadn't posted an election post, this would have been the movie I picked (but maybe not this scene ;-) ) My favotie character is Spicoli. And Mr.Hand.

I'm back and will be back for MCW next week. MRM is doing such a great job, do you think I can just participate and not have to come up with the themes? He's done a great job.

Great choice. When you said you were up and "moving in stereo" I did a fist pump and said YES! Don't know if you know this but she married Kevin Klein. They are still married and have 2 children. Great pick. "I will serve no fries before their time."

Buzz .... no surprise you didn't go with West Side Story . Your commentary makes me glad I don't happen to share a roadway with you.
I can understand how your distractive associations could have liabilities. Happy Wednesday and keep those hands on the wheel.

Good afternoon Buzz Kill,

Good choice, I actually have seen this one. And enjoyed it to boot. I must admit the reference to "moving in stereo" baffled me until I googled it.

Aloha Mr. Hand. There are so many great lines from that movie. The Brad in the Pirate outfit is a favorite scene because hte chick in the Corveete next to hime was Nancy Wilson from Heart. Totally hot back then. Also featured very young Anthony Edwards and Eric Stoltz as Spicoli's stoner buds.

Boxer
You KNOW you would have picked this scene. Bwahahaha

We have strict rules about who participates in MCW. The Madman rules with an iron fist. You know you can do what you want - it's Lord of the Flies here!

You knew I had to go with this. And you know I like the Cheap Trick reference:
Damone: Can you honestly tell me you forgot? Forgot the magnetism of Robin Zander, or the charisma of Rick Nielsen?

Fishy
You should see how I drive when Ravel's "Bolero" comes on (anyone get the reference?).

Karl
The Cars were one of my favorite bands from the 80s and this scene probably had a lot to do with it. I also use to go to a club (in my younger years) called the Penalty Box that featured a Cars cover band (and I can't remember their name).

im mortified to note that i too, see phoebe cates' classic unhooking bra scene. also funny is her taking the cosmo quiz and cheerfully reporting to still virginal jennifer jason leigh climaxing together is best. (in high school? as if!)

the terrifying date at the german restaurant. led zep in the car...awesome!

this movie features a young forest whitaker as well. but nothing tops the scene with mr hand spicoli and the pizza.

great choice!!! Happy MCW

When I go to Phillies home games, all the Phillies have a theme song that is played everytime they come up to bat. Chase Utley's is Cashmere and I think of the restaurant scene everytime he bats.

Where'd you get that jacket?

Buzz about Ravel's Bolero ...
was it not written for women? The pacing is perfect for maximum expression so ...um.... how can it not be inbedded in every mans psyche to stand proud?

Aunty Belle said...

first, that Anon above is CHICKEN!!

Reckon ya' doan refer to Torville and Dean's stunning ice skating routine at the 1984 Olympics performance to Bolero? naw, I thought not...ya mean Bo Derek's performance in 10. I always see Elizabeth Taylor as Cleopatra swayin'/ ridin' an elephant into Rome to the beat of Bolero.

Heh...reckon mah edoocation is sorely lackin' cause I ain't seen Ridgemont high. Mercy, but I wuz a sheltered thang.

Happy MCWW, a day late.
