Movie Clip Wednesday - Favorite Movie Set in Winter

The New Years Eve Grand Dame of Movie Clip Wednesday, Boxer is too busy cleaning eyelashes out of the vodka fountain. So it's the Milk River Madman that continues to take up the mantle that is MCW, the Meme where everyone picks a clip from their favorite movies based on a weekly theme and tries to keep the clip or clips to around 3 minutes long. This week's theme is FAVORITE MOVIE SET IN WINTER. A fairly narrow theme this week and appropriate because of the Nor' Easter that ripped through most of the US and affected just about everyone in some way. From digging out 10" of snow to delayed holiday flights, it let everyone know winter is here.

When I think of winter in movies, I think of war films. War is hell but it's way worse in the winter. A slightly obscure little Navy flick that takes place in the North Atlantic was the first thing that came to mind - 1965's The Bedford Incident. It has a star studded cast including Richard Widmark and Sidney Poitier and is about a cat and mouse came played by a US Destroyer and a Soviet submarine in the waters between Iceland and Greenland. A really good movie but I couldn't find a descent clip. I'm sure Karl has seen this one because it's a tension filled Cold-War era Navy movie - and because it's in black and white.

So instead I went with another 1965 war flick - The Battle of the Bulge. Another all-star cast (Henry Fonda, Telly Savalas, Charles Bronsin, Robert Shaw, etc.) with great tank battle scenes (although they are models) and winter ground fighting leading up to the siege of Bastogne. A better representation of that particular battle was in 2002's Band of Brothers, Episode 6 - Bastogne. Interestingly, both of my picks featured James MacArthur (Dano from Hawaii Five-O) who passed away this past year. Here is the movie trailer clip (a little long).

If you're not too hung over from Boxer's NYE Bash, head over to the Madman's for some winter chills and thrills.

Winter makes you think of war movies? I'd hate to see what Spring brings. Ahahaahhaha. OK, there's a ton of testosterone going around tonight between you, Karl and MRM. :-) I'll add this to my list of "never seen it", but I liked the clip and I'm was alwayas a fan of Telly Savales (not sure why.)

Off topic (kind of) are you watching the New Hawaii Five-0?

This was one of many classic War films that I enjoyed when I was younger. Not particularly one that I would have mentioned in conjunction with winter but I like your thinking :)

Never seen it. I either need to break down and subscribe to American Movie Classics (fudkers), or get Netflix. Otherwise I'm going to remain forever in the dark on some of these oldies-but-goodies. Happy Movie Clip Wednesday!

Good afternoon Buzz Kill,

CAPT Finlander: If he shoots first, I'll fire one.
Ensign Ralston: [launching the rocket] Fire One!

Bahawahawhahaha That would have been a great clip.

As far as the Battle of the Bulge: when I was a kid I thought it was great. Now I can't stand to watch it because of all the technical screw up's.

Happy Clip Day!

You know, baldness is a sign of high Testosterone. Ladies respond to that but for some reason, fellas feel compelled to have their head plugged. Oy vey. Ive saw this on TV -not quite as epic on a small screen. I think they should have old movie theatre houses again.

Good CHoice - and like war, football is also more interesting in snow. damn the domes!

Happy MCW

im up. follow me back to ice planet Hoth.

Spring brings to mind - HELL, because sports start and school stops. The testosterone counteracts the effects of Dr Zhivago and A Lion in Winter.

Haven't seen the new Five-o but only because I haven't paid attention to schedule and channel. I'll catch up with it. Loved the original. Kam Fong as Chin Ho. Why didn't they just let him use his real name?

Joanna
It must have been engrained in my mind when I was young that Bastogne equals snow. I can't explain it.

Aunty
Who loves ya baby? I think if you ask any soldier, they'll tell you they'd rather fight in the dessert than in the winter.

Moi
This was more of a good memory movie (about war - that doesn't sound right) from my younger years than being an actual good, technically acurate movie. Band of Brothers is a better watch.

Madman
It seems like Telly Savalas, Don Rickles or Ernest Borgnine were seargents or petty officers in just about every great war movie. Weird, huh?

Karl
That was the clip I was looking for - best scene in the movie. Had I found it, I wouldn't have subjected everyone to The Battle of the Bulge. The Bedford Incident (like Ice Station Zebra) was a much better movie.

Chicky
In my experience, baldness was a sign of - crazy. Every bald guy I know is wacky or scary.

Football is intersting in the snow - when viewed from my TV. I think they did the right thing postponing the Eagles/Vikings game last week. They would have had 4" of snow and 50 mph winds during an 8:20PM game. A lot of people and players would have gotten hurt.

Heff
Hope your OK pal. Haven't seen you since the Busch picture.
