Movie Clip Wednesday - Best Movie from Outer Space

That Movie Clip Wednesday Space Age Barbarella, Boxer wants us to leave the confines of earth for this week's Movie Clip Wednesday. This MCW Meme has everyone picking a clip from their favorite movies based on a weekly theme while trying to keep the clip or clips to around 3 minutes long. This week's theme is Best Movie from Outer Space or Best Movie Set in Space, depending on which part of her blog you're reading. I will go with the latter because, quite honestly, I don't know any movie that has come from outer space with the possible exception of Caddyshack 2.

Well, this isn't the best movie set in space, but I like it a lot and it's keeping with my recent movies-from-the-80s sub-theme. That movie would be 1984's The Last Starfighter. It's a movie about a boy (Lance Guest was 24 when the movie was made) who is recruited through a video game to "defend the frontier against Xur and the Ko-Dan armada". One of the first movies to use CGI, it has some good battle scenes and some good sets. It's kind of a Star Wars knockoff and has a certain Spielberg-esque quality to it. This was Robert Preston's last film.

And this is a first for me. I have secured the services of both Hulu and YouTube to show the actual scenes that I wanted to show (God, I hope it works). The 2nd clip is the infamous "Death Blossom" scene. I always thought that was cool name for a weapon of last resort. Make sure you click on "A Gung Ho Iguana".

If you're looking for some good alien-on-alien scifi action, then head on over to Boxer's, Princess Leia of the bloggoshere.

Nice choice Buzz... I don't remember this movie but it looks like fun. For a "kid" the lead has a mean 5 o'clock shadow... The CGI isn't too bad for the time it was made.

Happy MCW.... May the "Farce" be with you...

this is one of Mr.Boxer's favorites and if I saw it I don't remember. Still, you, lasers and a death blossom. Happy MCW!

Look, you all know there is only one good space movie and that's Star Trek II - Wrath of Khan. So since I would only have repeated myself, I've given you something completely different based on what I thought this week's theme was... when I looked a week ago :)

Good afternoon buzz kill,

I used to have this movie on VHS and or was it Beta. I can't remember now. Anyway it was a good movie, I enjoyed most anything with Preston in it.

You MUST rent Galaxy Quest and watch with your boys. It's hysterical! Trust me. Even Mrs. Buzz Kill may enjoy.

I think he was portraying an 18 year old, but he still looked too old. By Avatar standards, the CGI is kind of hokey, but I still like the story and comedy writing in this.

Way back in the days before on-line gaming, the company I worked for had multiple computer stations linked through a network server (a big deal in the early 90s). At lunch time, 6 of us would get together and play a game called Descent, which was a space ship type 1st-person shooter that we could link together through the network and kill each other. One of the weapons was similar to death blossom and that's what we always called it. It's amazing we didn't get fired because of all the cursing and smack talk coming from various cubicles on the floor.

Troll
It's a movie you could watch with the family, but kids would probably think the CGI was bad.

Heff! - You old so-and-so! I haven't heard from you since you were face down after New Years. I miss your blog and I haven't seen a Playboy cover since last year. Come back Heff - come back!

Boxer
It's really a family movie and there's some girlie romance in it too. The boys have seen Galaxy Quest and we may even have it on DVD. If not I'll ask them to put it in the NetFlix que.

Joanna
It doesn't matter what you play as long as you play. Kaaaaaaahhhnn!

Karl
Beta - you're funny. Although back in the 80s, beta was the format of choice of the government. Maybe you are CIA. I'm not a big Preston fan because I always thought he overacted in a lot of his roles (Music Man especially) but he was OK in this.
