Movie Clip Wednesday - Best Sequel

Boxer is taking a break this month and the Milk River Madman has graciously offered to host the Movie Clip Wednesday Meme where everyone picks a clip from their favorite movies based on a weekly theme. This week's theme is BEST SEQUEL. Now there are a number of movie franchises that have many sequels to them. Star Wars, Star Trek and James Bond immediately come to mind. And while some of the sequels were good, when you have mega-franchises like these that produce a film every other year, the sequels tend to be meh.

The movie that immediately came to me because this was a sequel that was way better than the original, was The Road Warrior. I remember seeing this with a bunch of college buddies at an on-campus screening and it was great. I didn't see the original, Mad Max until a couple of years later and was very disappointed. Yet I didn't choose this one because of the high probability of blogger jinx.

What I did choose was 1973's Magnum Force, the sequel to 1971's Dirty Harry. Everyone that reads me knows I'm a big Clint Eastwood fan (and so is Madman and I'm hoping I didn't blogger jinx here too). Magnum Force was a great follow-up to what would become one of (if not the biggest) police movie franchises in history. The subsequent sequels, The Enforcer, Sudden Impact and The Dead Pool just went down hill from Magnum Force. Harry Callahan was Clint's career-defining character and the target range scene is one of my favorites.

Man's got to know his limitations. (I couldn't embed this one, so you're going to YouTube).

So go over and see the Madman for more of the best movie sequels ever made (and I'm real curious to see what everyone comes up with).

Blogger ate my comment!

Gotta get the kid ready for the last day of school, then I'll be back to watch the clip.

Well done sir! So cool to back and look at these movies and see some starts. The blond guy is David Soul from Starsky and Hutch fame. After he is done with his combat shooting you can see a yound Tim Matheson who would star as Otter in Animal House.

Go shoot a 9mm piston then pick up even a .357 magnum. No comparison. Not to mention the .45 mag Harry is carrying. It almost jumps out of your hand.

Happy MCW.

Well, Blowfish would agree with you. Was Magnum Force the one where Callahan walked out into the street eating his hot dog while reducing the bad guy to gore?

Dirty Harry was Moi's childhood hero. Too bad I can't shoot worth a crap . . . Happy MCW! I'm not playing this week, but had I done so, I would have chosen the Road Warrior. Pre-bat shit crazy Mel Gibson was one of the finest men to ever walk the big screen.

Good afternoon Buzz Kill,

I had a feeling you go with Clint Eastwood. You made a good choice I've always liked the line "man's got to know his limitations" I liked it better than "go ahead make my day'.

You gotta love Hollywood, that drop and roll that David Soul did while had a target standing and still two rounds of his weapon is comical. And Eastwood using a 1 arm firing stance with his .44 but a 2 arm stance with the 357.

Anyway good choice, enjoy your clip day.

Moi can't shoot but she can sure talk her guns. :-) I'm not in this week, but I wanted to see what you came up with. I love that you picked Dirty Harry movies. They were a great franchise and never suffered the way many franchises did. Great pick and happy MCW.

Last day of school? My kids go until the 22nd.

Madman
When I was reading some info on this movie, I'd forgoten how many stars and soon-to-be stars were in this flick. I think out of all the Dirty Harrys this one had the most firepower.

Fishy
You're thinking of the original Dirty Harry. Although in this one he walks out of an airport cafe eating a hamburger, then procedes to kill terrorists highjacking a plane. Way before it was fashionable to do so.

Moi
Yeah, the Road Warrior was my 1st choice and (I hate to say it) better than Dirty Harry. The impressive thing was that it was way better than Mad Max and Thunderdome too (too much rhyming in that one).

Karl
I always thought the part of this scene with David Soul was so pretensious. And I always liked the way Harry handled that gun. I fired one when I was a teenager. My uncle loaded it with 5 target rounds and 1 magnum round. I almost split my head open.

Nothing wrong with shooting as long as the right people get shot!

Joanna
As I'm visiting people I'm seeing a lot of good sequels I never thought of either. And I would have bet cash money you were going to do Wrath of Kahn.

Boxer
You were missed this week. With Madman picking the themes, you can really smell the testosterone can't you? The Dirty Harry series is without a doubt my favorite, trapped-on-a-dessert island movie pick. Next weeks theme will be easier - I think.
