Movie Clip Wednesday - Movies That Should Have Won Best Picture

Boxer is taking a break this month (and maybe longer?) and the Milk River Madman has graciously offered to host the Movie Clip Wednesday Meme where everyone picks a clip from their favorite movies based on a weekly theme. This week's theme is MOVIES THAT SHOULD HAVE WON BEST PICTURE. This is an excellent theme. I did a little looking and realized that 1976's Rocky beat out Taxi Driver for best picture. What? I mean, Rocky is a good rah-rah sports underdog movie, but De Nero's performance in Taxi Driver was stellar. So off I went to find the clips and I actually found the "screwheads" and the "bloody finger gun to the head" scenes. Perfect, I'll write this up and I'm done.

But something was nagging at me. Wasn't there another film that I liked that was made in 1976? Research again. Well, there was Network - meh, except for the "mad as hell" quote a pretty forgettable movie. There was also All the President's Men - boring. And Carrie which was kind of scary for me because I was graduating high school right around then, but it had some good nudity. Then I remembered. The best western/civil war movie EVER MADE - The Outlaw Josey Wales.

How this movie didn't get nominated for best picture and best supporting actor (Chief Dan George) is beyond me. It did, however, get nominated for best music, original score and lost to The Omen. Best music, really? Other than the opening song and Rose of Alabamy, I never realized there was any music in this movie because of all the gun fire. Anyway, here's the movie trailer followed by the best line (and there are many - Don't piss down my back and tell me it's raining comes to mind) in the whole movie.

This short commercial clip is funny as hell.

Go on over and see the Madman to see what other movies were snubbed by the academy.

And not that I have anything against the Madman but:

Boxer! Come back!

Great choice Buzz. Some OJW trivia for you that I'm sure you know. Abe is "Uncle Leo" from Seinfeld. The leader of the Comancheros is also the leader of the Black Widows in "Every which way but loose". I love the "don't piss down my back line" especially the fact that its uttered by John Vernon, who also played Dean Wermer in Animal House. Great choice. I got ahead of myself with themes and put up the wrong one. Made it easier for you next week. Am open to suggestions as well. Themes are way harder than it looks but there have to be more.

Forgot to tell you that I love the Shane clip. That might be a good theme. A "whatever happened to" kind of deal. See you're helping already. I just read Brandon De Wilde's (Joey) IMBD. He died in 1972 in a single car accident going to see his wife in the hospital.

Buzz,
It took a very long time for the Hollywood crowd to admit there might be more to Clint than chaps.
Interesting choice and I agree, nominated for the music? Wonder what the true back story is on that?

Was Sondra Locke in EVERY Eastwood film ever made, or what ?

Wasn't Sondra Locke Eastwood's wife at the time?

Ok, Buzz, so either I am going insane or Blogspot is playin' games with me. I could have sworn that I've left comments on several of your last posts and they are gone. That has happened to me with Karmic Kitchen too. WTF?

I love CE and he's a badass that can do no wrong. This movie was one of my favorites. Hope you are enjoying your garden!

PS: I like your new blog design too.

SHANE! We saw that movie at a Drive In and my entire family would yell "Shane! Come back Shane" for absolutely no reason. I think MRM has better ideas and I'll be back in the MCW groove soon. If you want to see a guy get kicked in the head by a horse, come on over!

I actually did know those trivia tidbits except the Brandon De Wilde one. Here's one for you. The guy that played Al in Zukie's store was played by John Mitchum, Robert Mitchum's brother. And Zukie was played by Charles Tyner, who also played Unger in the original The Longest Yard. I could do this all day.

The opening instrumental song (and I don't know the name of it) with the fife and drums is pretty catchy and may be what garnered the oscar nod. Or maybe they just threw the movie a bone because the academy knew it should have been best picture - in my opinion.

Heff
She was in 6 of Clint's films while she was his main squeeze for 15 years (thye never married). She was still technically married (although separated) during that time to some other guy. Clint could have done so much better. After Clint dumped her, she made the memorable 1986 Ratboy.

Diva
I've seen a lot of comments from you but may not have replied to all of them. And I just discovered that I can change my blog design.

Boxer
I felt like little Joey Starrett when I realized you haven't hosted in a month. *tears welling* I hope the clip conveyed my feelings.

Karl
It's by no means a perfect movie, but I love the feel of it and the fact that it's both a western and a war movie wrapped into one.

Chicky
My other favorite line that I use around the house all the time is "I reckon so."

This is my favorite Lone Watie scene but I couldn't find the clip:

Lone Watie: How did you know which one was goin' to shoot first?
Josie Wales: Well, that one in the center: he had a flap holster and he was in no itchin' hurry. And the one second from the left: he had scared eyes, he wasn't gonna do nothin'. But that one on the far left: he had crazy eyes. Figured him to make the first move.
Lone Watie: How 'bout the one on the right?
Josie Wales: Never paid him no mind; you were there.
Lone Watie: I could have missed.

Favorite scene from Unforgiven:

Will Munny: All right, I'm coming out. Any man I see out there, I'm gonna shoot him. Any sumbitch takes a shot at me, I'm not only gonna kill him, but I'm gonna kill his wife, all his friends, and burn his damn house down.
