Movie Clip Wednesday - Best Actress of the 1970s

Looks like Boxer is on an extended sabbatical and the Milk River Madman is graciously continuing to host the Movie Clip Wednesday Meme where everyone picks a clip from their favorite movies based on a weekly theme. This week's theme is BEST ACTRESS OF THE 1970s. This theme was way tougher than I thought it would be - and here's why. The first thing I did was look up Best Actress Oscar winners from the 1970s. Here they are:

1970 Best Actress Glenda Jackson for "Women in Love"

1971 Best Actress Jane Fonda for "Klute"

1972 Best Actress Liza Minnelli for "Cabaret"

1973 Best Actress Glenda Jackson for "A Touch of Class"

1974 Best Actress Ellen Burstyn for "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore"

1975 Best Actress Louise Fletcher for "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest"

1976 Best Actress Faye Dunaway for "Network"

1977 Best Actress Diane Keaton for "Annie Hall"

1978 Best Actress Jane Fonda for "Coming Home"

1979 Best Actress Sally Field for "Norma Rae"

Jeez, Jane Fonda, Liza Minnelli and Glenda Jackson - really? Are those my choices? Well, upon further inspection, I saw Sally Field on the list. Now, I thought she was pretty hot in Smokey and the Bandit and Hooper (I was in my mid-teens for christs sake). But it was Norma Rae that put her on the movie radar and that led to a bunch of other movies that I liked including Forrest Gump, Mrs. Doubtfire and Places in the Heart (Does that make me gay? Madman?). This is one of my favorite scenes from Norma Rae:

And lest we forget that she started her career in TV with Gidget and one of my favorite TV shows when I was like 8 years old - the Flying Nun. A big deal for an 8 year old Catholic School boy.

Wanna see more hot, 70s chicks (that are now in their 70s), then go over and see the Madman .

Great post Buzz,
The flying Nun was a real hoot!

Haha! My fave comment was the end: Hot 70's chicks in their 70's. Wow. Time flies.

(And apparently so do nuns!)

I honestly DIDN'T think you'd pick her, but I agree. Sally Field rocks.

Gay? Because you like "Places in the Heart" which is an effin awesome movie! Not even close my friend. One of the best endings of all time.

Sally Field was smokin hot in the day and at 64 is still pretty good looking. Born the same year as Keaton and Talia Shire. Isn't that kinda odd. I did my research the same way. Really thought the choice would be easier. Happy MCW.

Sally Field has been in both ER and Brothers & Sisters on TV recently and she's still looking good - although there were nudges about some surgical assistance.

I can't believe I didn't think of Glenda Jackson. She did some great work and is so typically British :)

Holy cow. I am busted for being old enough to remember watching The Flying Nun when it came to TV. And that is AFTER the fact that I remember watching Sally Field as Gidget on TV. Dang, thanks for making me feel really old.

Good evening Buzz Kill,

I haven't seen Norma Rae, although I did watch the Flying Nun as a kid.

I always wondered in that first scene. When the wing on the hat, flips up. Why she didn't crash.

Happy clip day!

I was so intrigued by this show as a kid because the nuns I had as teachers weren't near as cool or good looking or young.

Diva
I could hear the rim shot after your 2nd comment.

Heff
I thought pickings were really slim for the 70s. I really liked her in Hooper.

Jingle
...all the way dude, all the way.

Joanna
Her face looks to good not to have had a little help. But she did hold up well.

Pam
I only ever saw Gidget in reruns, and then not so much. You're only as old as the TV shows you remember? Interesting theory.

Chicky
Places in the Heart is the first movie I remember seeing John Malkovich in. Norma Rae was a good movie but it doesn't really hold up to time very well. Take a pass on it.

Karl
Do you think TV execs would let things like gravity and aerodynamics get in the way of a hit comedy? How come she didn't get sucked into the plane engine when she was looking at Paul Lynde? I DON'T KNOW!

Sally Field is one of our greatest actresses (I like her, I really like her!), but I think Jane Fonda's work in Klute was probably the most interesting out of all those films. The fact that Donald Sutherland played the love interest, though, still cracks me up. Even young, he looked like a Bassett Hound.
