Troll's October Culinary Throwdown

After much badgering from Troll for his "Steak and Potatoes October Throwdown", I decided (at the very last minute) to make a very lame, first-time entry. So here is a typical Thursday night dinner, prepared in about 25 minutes because that's generally all the time I have to get dinner on the table at 6:00PM (as ordered by the Mrs - and I follow orders or people die). Turns out the Mrs was late anyway - again.

Anyway, this is a pan-fried ham steak, steamed potatoes with fresh rosemary and canned green beans (yes, I said canned).

So there you have it, food on a shoestring that has nothing to do with October, every night and on time. Meat and potatoes - it's what's for dinner bitches (that's what I call the monsters when they whine about what's for dinner).

Good morning Buzz Kill,

I'm willing to bet that after whining about what's for dinner, they sit down and clean their plates.

Howdy Señor Buzz!

You get Moi Points for:

1. Doing the cooking, period. You're about the umpteenth man I know who has taken over cooking duties for his family. Not sure what that trend is about, but bless every one of ya.

2. Simplicity and speed. I know how hard it is to come home after a day in the trenches, stare at the contents of the refrigerator, and want to stick a fork through my skull because I have neither the energy nor the time to put a meal together. Here, you threw something together that, while not fancy, is nonetheless tasty and nutritious.

The monsters always eat everything I make because they wouldn't eat otherwise. The boy comes up from his Xbox play in the basement to feed for 10 minutes, then he's gone fore the rest of the night. The pudge actually will help me clean up and then watch the Phils game with me. The Mrs usually goes to bed by 9:00PM after eating a reheated dinner because she's late all the time.

These are the hellish weekdays that I live over and over...

I cook because:
1. I enjoy it. It's very theraputic after a long day in the office.
2. The Mrs doesn't enjoy it, can't really cook to begin with (I blame her mother) and comes home late. We would never eat if we waited on her.

I generally have an idea of what I'm cooking before I get home. Tonight will be chicken parm with noodles and salad. How I actually pull it off will be decided on the fly.

Mmmmmmm. Ham. Nature's meat-candy! Love it. Bet it, and the rosemary smelled great whilst cooking.

OOOoooohh! I didn't think about going the ham route. Yummy. (and I do canned green beans all the time.)

I like that you chose ham for a steak! Brilliant! (and economical!)

I'm also wondering why you haven't enlisted the help of your monkeys to help you in the kitchen? have one of them snap the stem ends off of fresh beans and then pop 'em into a steam bag and nuke for three minutes! So much tastier than the canned beans! Get the other one to peel the 'taters! I always thought the reason people have kids is to have ready-made slaves! (haha!)

I like to cook to "de-stress" too. I'm not up yet, I've been sick and hubby made dinner! I think I might even let HIM post! Good job, Buzzy!
