From time to time I talk on the phone with people from around the country. It's no secret that I'm from Southern NJ, but a lot people think I have either a New York or South Philly accent. I can hear those accents when I talk to people from those areas, but I don't hear it in my own dialect. Anyway, a friend sent me a link to an online quiz called
The American Accent Quiz. So I took this quiz and damned if it didn't nail me as being from Philadelphia. Do any of you have accents?

It pegged me as "Midland," which could mean anywhere, basically. At least I'm not getting one of those Linda McCartney / Madonna kind of British-American accents. I don't think anyway. Oh, it also said I had a good voice for radio. How it saw me through the computer screen, I have no idea.
when I lived in Philadelphia I was told I had an accent. ahahah. Oh, really? Philly accents are different than NJ or NY.... you roll your O's in a way that's very distinctive. I love accents, they fascinate me, especially ones in the U.S. I love Chickory's accent... it's Southern, but with something else tossed in. I'm going to check out your link.

I'm North Central? My Mom was from NY so we all pronounce orange as "AR-RINGE" instead "OAR-RING."

Your accent is the lowest common denominator of American speech. Unless you're a SoCal surfer, no one thinks you have an accent. And really, you may not even be from the West at all, you could easily be from Florida or one of those big Southern cities like Dallas or Atlanta.

Oklahoma is about as mid-land as you can get, so I think the quiz worked. And I'm glad it didn't say you had a face for radio. Bwahahaha

I can't detect a SJ accent, but North Jersey and NY are very similar. South Philly is different from the rest of Philly and somewhere in between Philly an NY. You dig? Bwahahaha

North Central would put you in California. Close enough.

I think a southerner could tell if they had an accent. All they have to do is watch any movie or TV show and realize those people talk funny. I'd like to hear what Chicky's quiz comes up with.
All of my father's family comes from NYC, but dispersed as adults into the Philly, NJ, Connecticut and Boston areas. When I was in Newtown in August, everyone's voice made me nostalgic.
I invented this quiz.
I was in the No Accent could be from anywhere category. The whole Mid-Atlantic Region sounds similar to me. I.E. Eastern PA. NJ. Delaware. New York State.

Heh on Chickie's result! See, Southerner's don't drip honey in their voice unless they need to turn it on ... I'm sure I can talk as southern as Auntie if need be. I think your quiz needs to be more specific. If it can identify a Texan from a Georgian, then I will be impressed ....

I just remembered we took a similar but superior quiz in College. But it was verbal, and it didn't ASK you if you could tell pen from pin and don from dawn. It had you rapidly read a script that included pen/pin dawn/don to an expert.
And he nailed just about everyone including me. He said "The South, probably Central or South Florida." He'd probably nail Chicky as well.

I've been told I have a neutral slightly southern accent. The survey said: "North Central" is what professional linguists call the Minnesota accent. If you saw "Fargo" you probably didn't think the characters sounded very out of the ordinary. Outsiders probably mistake you for a Canadian a lot.
The accents from Fargo where one of the most funny parts of the movie. I don't think I've ever been mistaken for a Canadian.
This was funny. I did the quiz and it pegged me from the Midland. Well, I'm from Michigan but I don't have that northern Yooper Michigan accent that I hear in others from there and a lot of people think I'm from NY. Some people peg me right away.
When I moved back from Australia, everyone was expecting me to have an accent. It never happened. I say Aussie words cuz living in a place 10 years + you get that but I'm not a poser like Madonna!
When I did sales living in Sydney, I had people who just loved to listen to me talk and loved my accent. I also got used to hearing many accents and loved the Scots and Glaswegians in particular. Interesting stuff.

Oops. My accent is the Inland North. NOT the Midland. Makes perfect sense, ay?
I'm from South Wales, U.K, and lived in England for 1 year before moving on up to Scotland, people can't pin my accent. Its so good, better than people getting it wrong.
